J.B. McCampbell is the founder and principal owner of JBM Media Services, which provides photographic, video production, social media and media relations consultation services and is based in Clay, NY, in suburban Syracuse.
An award-winning photographer, McCampbell earned top honors in the 2021 Summer Photo Contest’s “Street Life” category presented by The Stand, South Side Newspaper Project. More recently, his images have been published in The Post-Standard and Cazenovia Republican. Other McCampbell photographs have appeared in The Blade (Toledo, Ohio), About Time magazine and Cleveland (Ohio) Magazine among others.
JBM Media Services is a winner of the AVA Gold Award in the pro bono category and honorable mention recognition in the international competition’s streaming video category. The Syracuse-based multi-media development firm produced the award-winning 3-minute, 33 second online video to promote a series of yoga classes formerly presented by 100 Black Men of Syracuse, Inc.
The AVA Gold Award is presented by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals to those entries that exceed industry norms. The video produced by JBM Media Services can be viewed on YouTube at http://youtu.be/Dr_XYZwRQO0.
McCampbell also serves in a volunteer capacity as Chief Communications Officer for 100 Black Men of Syracuse, where he has been a member since 2008, and served as a member of the organization’s board of directors and vice president of administration. In February 2022, he was recognized for his service with 100 Black Men by the Syracuse Crunch hockey team as the Amazon.com Community Hero of the Game. Additionally, he is a member of the Rotary Club of Eastwood (Syracuse).
A former journalist, McCampbell and his family moved to the Syracuse, NY-area in 1991 and was employed as a features copy editor at the former Herald-Journal after working as a feature writer, sports copy editor and reporter, and business writer at daily newspapers in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Before leaving Toledo, Ohio, where he grew up, McCampbell earned a bachelor’s degree in political science at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Subsequently, he was employed as a news reporter and producer for the city’s local public radio station and was a freelance writer for several magazines. Since his days as a journalist, McCampbell completed graduate-level courses in communications management at Syracuse University, served in various capacities as a public relations, marketing and communications professional, and is a former president of the Central New York Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
